Striking Blue-breasted Cordon Bleu finches are playful and entertaining companion birds in your aviary. The Blue-Breasted Cordon Bleu (Uraeginthus angolensis), also called the Blue Waxbill, is a common species of estrildid finch found in Southern Africa. The powder-blue face, breast and flanks are diagnostic. Female is dowdier than male but also shows blue underparts. Call is a soft ‘seee-seee’, often repeated as bird flits through the lower parts of bush and scrub.
The Blue Breasted Cordon Bleu is the smallest of the 3 species of Cordon Bleu waxbill finches, reaching approximately 4.5″ to 5″ in length. Both parents build a dome shaped nest with an entrance at the side, out of grasses, moss and coconut fibre. Nest is lined with feathers and soft fine grasses. November grass and Swamp grass are favourites. Cordon Bleus will hybridize if mixed together in the same aviary.
Diet: Basic seed mix should include Canary seed, White French Millet, Japanese Millet, Yellow and Red Panicum and responds well with Australian Blend Goldenfeast.
DNA Testing:
If there is no gender option listed for a bird on our website, that particular species is ‘monomorphic’, which means we’re unable to determine gender without purchasing DNA testing. DNA testing is an additional $149 per bird to guarantee preferred gender. DNA testing may add an additional 3-6 plus weeks to estimated delivery time to allow for gender results.
